Ramdog’s Clarence Wilderness weekend

Clarence Wilderness Weekend Group Ride This ride was a cracker. Eight or nine chickened out. Made of sugar. But the rest of us had a ripper. A tough crew were well rewarded. we had an absolute ball. We got off to a fairly formidable start in steady rain at Coraki, but once west a few kilometres the weather improved, tracks were soft damp and perfectly tractable…mostly. NO DUST. Koos did it the toughest with a…

Blog: March 5. I like the SWMs.

Hey-up everyone. In the middle of the crisis that’s my work at the moment, I shot down to Sydney for a quick blast on an SWM RS500R. The bike is an ex-media test bike that had been shopped around several magazines. SWM dealer MRD Motorcycles at North Richmond bought the bike and owner Mark – who’s very handy getting a bike to perform – set about turning the 500cc four-stroke enduro bike into a user-friendly…

Blog: February 26. Got a bit on

A very quick entry today – and it’s a late entry, too. Done nuthin’. Been nowhere. Others have, though. Darren AC did Ramdog Dave’s ride and sent me through a couple of pics. It looks like it was a good one. I’m riding an SWM RS500 this week. I’ll tell you about next week. TF

Blog: February 19. Riding a sidecar is poo-your-pants scary

As forecast in last week’s blog I’ve been riding a sidecar, and it’s a very, very scary experience. I was lucky because Greg Jansen of Rocky Creek Designs is a sidecar enthusiast and when he heard I was to ride the Ural Sahara he got involved and organised a day’s training for me with uralofoz.com.au main man Jon Taylor. Thank Dog Greg did. I honestly believe trying to handle the Ural without the coaching would’ve…

Blog: February 12. I’m getting lazy

Hey-up. I managed to get out on the Dominator for an hour or so this last week, thanks to Nigel Locke. I’ve been keen to ride with the Coffs Restorer’s Club, but haven’t made it to any meetings. Attending meetings is how you join the club, and I knew both Gav Gill and Nige were members. I had some bits and pieces for Nige, so I phoned when I thought the meeting was on, figuring…

Blog: February 5. Good to see some rain

I hope everyone’s been out taking advantage of the rain to enjoy a little dust-free riding. The KLR is having its blubbering problem sorted. Dan Vaughan picked a partially blocked main jet as the cause. That would certainly cause the problem, and of course I didn’t think of it myself. Dan listened patiently while I explained the problem, complete with my impersonations of flubbing engine noises and body position to show I was on uphills….

Blog: January 29. Bad news

A fatality is a sad thing no matter who’s involved, but when it’s a rider it seems a little close. In this case I expect everyone would be aware of Damon Stokie’s fatal accident competing in the Deep Well enduro near Alice Springs on Saturday. Stokie won Finke in 2017 and must’ve been a fast and determined rider. I didn’t know him, but it still leaves me feeling sad. I’ve used Yamaha Motor Australia’s pic…

Blog: January 22. Dakar.

Dakar finished in the early hours of the morning our time. I was up just after 5.00am and at the computer, keen to see whether Toby Price had pulled off a miracle. In a way he had. Finishing third is probably a bit of a bummer for Toby. He’s proven he can win it. He won a stage again this year, so he’s as fast as the fastest riders. A navigation error cost him over…

Blog: January 15. A desk week

‘Ay-oop, everyone. I spent most of this last week in Sydney, so I don’t have much to report. Sydney time is desk time, and usually it’s fairly demanding desk time. This week was a real bag of bricks but it’s done now and I’m looking forward to getting in a ride or two over the next couple of weeks. I have some interesting things coming up. The first is I’ve been given a Tomtom Rider…
