Blog: July 29. Been in Sydney for a week

Another week away working, this time in Sydney. Like the trip to Melbourne, I was able to catch up with some great people from years – and decades – past. Toby Andrews at Off Road Imports, the Kawasaki guys – who have a poster of my son up on the boardroom wall – Nick Dole at Teknik and a wild crew at Ballard’s.

The Ballard’s night was halfway to being an unplanned visit. I lobbed in Sydney Sunday night to swag it in the van and start work on Monday morning. The little moey next to work was booked out Tuesday night, so I booked in for the Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and when I was talking to GB he suggested I stay at The Farm on Tuesday night. “The Farm” is GB’s amazing farmhouse not far from Lithgow, and he was having some friends over to run through the Four Day and look at some pics.

So that worked out well. And what a crew! They were all more mature blokes, except for Jason Barrett of Barrett exhausts who still looks so young, and it seems the main entertainment of the night was for everyone to take the rinse out of everyone else. It was hilarious. Allan Cunningham of Safari fame showed up with an apple pie his wife had baked for the evening, and that followed the insanely awesome steaks Brownie had supplied and cooked. As we wandered through the Four Day stories and watched a heap of youtube clips of various rides and riders, it finished up a sensational night. I decided to leave at around 10.00pm to swag it in the office car park so I could be at my desk by 9.00am, and it was the highlight of the week.

The next big thing we have to look forward to is the One Day Challenge ride on August 10. I’ll pick up the Dominator this week so it should be in premium shape for that ride, and then the following week we’re all faced with a choice. There’s the Old Bull ride I talked about last week, and there’s now a three-dayer starting in Coffs on Friday. Chris Laan at the Shed Market organises what looks like superb dualsport rides, and I’m pretty keen to try one. This ride on the 16th, 17th and 18th looks like this:

I’m looking forward to riding with Whippie, and we can both only do the Saturday. That makes it difficult to do Chris’ ride this time. I’ll see what happens when I talk to him during the week, though. It looks like a great ride, and I’m keen to make the most of whatever time I can get on a bike at the moment.

So I haven’t much to complain about this last week…except I didn’t do any riding, of course. But then again, we have a couple of good weeks coming up. Maybe I’ll even have time to pre-ride the One Day Challenge course next Saturday. I hope so. I’ll chase Marty Hard-core and see what he’s up to.

Hey Dave and Karen so far Caroline is not coming due to other commitments its a soft excuse isn’t it .She done her P’s test on Sunday and got them THANK GOD.And Karen the key to the slippery stuff dont grab a big hand full of front brake that can make it a quick trip to the ground.By the way Karen I think you did a great job on the CCC ride that sand riding is definetly a undies changing experience LOL.We had a weekend away the week before Caroline went for her P’s we went to Glenn Innes great riding had a bit of everything rain ,sun , frost ,clay , cow crap that is a question for Caroline if I can talk her into coming on the 10th. Catch up on the ride, don’t forget Tom’s bickies they’ll go well with coffee.Dean

File of daily routes for GPS available for anyone that wants them. Formats are GPX, RTE and UPT hopefully that is enough because I really don’t know how to do any more. Let me know your email address and I will send them through.

I will need to know number by say the 12th August so I can tentatively book the pubs. If you have any particular preferences like wanting a room to yourself, etc. book the bloody things yourself 😉 (all help and no responsibility is the motto).

It will be fine Karen, there will be cutouts and unfortunately a mountain bike race has closed the really slippery stuff and the holey bridge, I have a few suitable replacements available but being also partial to fresh biccies I’ll be nice besides I have to get tom and the NX through to the coffee stop.
    And the mystery bike is?

Your reply has made me feeling slightly better about the day Marty. Looking forward to advice, tips and expert assistance from anyone who cares to throw it my way. In return, I will have an ample supply of freshly baked biccies.
The mystery bike is the Terra 🙂 🙂

So far we have seven riders, myself, Maso, Boz, Waylo, Muz, Dave and Kurt plus our support driver, Roughie.

I have booked rooms for eight at the Country Club Motel ( (02) 6558 1812) in Gloucester for Friday night. Cost works out at $55 per head.

There have been eight beds booked at the Victorian Hotel in Barraba (0267821004) for the Saturday night. Cost here is $25 per head. Phil from Gunnedah will be joining us for the night here as well.

Anyone else interested please let me know so I can adjust the bookings to suit. Plan is to be ready to leave the BP at Boambee (Wimpy for the locals) at 8.30 so please get there early enough to be fuelled and fed (if needed) before then.
