Secret Squirrel reporting in…

20151123_130637Well, it was that time of year  when the special day arrives and you get another year older.

With that thought in mind I pointed the special Secret Squirrel DR bike west.

With a bit of a pre-ride for the Longest Day ride planned it was up the mountain to Dorrigo, and as usual it was thick fog and drizzle all the way to Ebor – the grip heaters were on and all! But the lure of Baldsleigh Road got me through Guyra without a pitstop for gravy and chips at the servo – Marty Hardcore will weep when he finds out.

Sunshine followed me all the way to Bundarra and by picking up the route from Vince Strang’s recent ride I was soon at Pindarri Dam and Ashford. But with a Storm Of Death in front of me at Bonshaw I decided it was no time to be brave, so I headed the other direction to Tenterfield. The whole way all I could see in my mirrors was lightning and the ground shook with big grumbles of thunder.

20151122_152058Just as I pulled into Jennings Pub and threw my backpack and saddlebags onto the veranda the heavens opened up. So the evening was spent on the veranda sipping ales watching the lightning fill the sky. There were big smiles from everyone there.

Monday morning was clear so we were away early, following amazing backroads behind Stanthorpe to Killarney, then to ride the famous Condamine Gorge Road with its four river crossings. While the crossings were pretty easy the scenery through there is very special. It’s a must-do ride to put on your bucket list.

20151123_090829Eventually the SSDR wobbled its way up Rocky River Road back to Tenterfield. By this time it was 3.00pm, so with the SSDR in overdrive the Old Grafton-Glen Innes Road went by – but not without stopping and buying as much of Hibbo’s honey at Newton Boyd as I could hang off the DR.

We were all to soon home back in Coffs.

It was another Secret Squirrel mission successfully accomplished, but next time I head back that way, another secret agent – DRZ Mike who actually rides an XR (a very cleaver disguise too, I might add) – has promised to lead me behind enemy lines into trails seldom used, known only to those who seek out adventure, and those who don’t mind coming home long after dark.

It sounds like a great ride coming up right there.

Right-o. So I hope to see a few turn up for the longest day ride at Sawtell Headland. See you all there, or at Ramdog Dave’s wattle flat ride before then.

Secret Squirrel signing out till next time.
