Blog: November 21. A bit glum, but smiling

longestday6_28It’s Saturday afternoon. The World Rally Championship is tearing up the trails around home, and Craig Murcott and Marty Blake invited me to join them taking in some of the action yesterday. Of course it was a work day, so I would’ve had trouble getting away, but what made me glum was not having a registered bike to go with them, even if I’d wanted to. See last week’s blog for the reasons. Nothing’s changed.

I didn’t feel any better as I sat at my desk desperately trying to get my work done before the company closes down for Christmas when a bike horn started beeping outside the window. I looked up in time to see Craig and Marty on their DR650s and Dean Anthony on his 690 squirting past, obviously away to their next vantage point.

Dooooooo’h.

Now today I’m sitting at my desk again and watching posts like this come up on Facebook…

Still, I do look like making my next deadline, so that’s good news.

On a related topic, I’m smiling away because Karen Ramsay is on Facebook right now lamenting a case of writer’s block.

I met Karen and Dave, I think, three years ago, and I’ve really enjoyed watching Karen make various adventure-riding discoveries, and especially some of her insightful thoughts on riding in general. These days she’s got some big runs on the board as adventure rider, and I admire her for it. Husband Dave has taken to organising rides and does them really well. Dave and Karen always seem to be enjoying themselves, and it makes them great company. They’re the kind of people who make riding such a worthwhile and fun thing to do and I’m looking forward to the time I can lob up and join one of their rides.

(I’m stroking my Secret Squirrel trophy) There may possibly be another ANZAC bikkie shootout. Who can say?

IMG_0020So no riding for me again this week. Everyone from work is down at the southern Congregation in Victoria and texting me pics to put on Facebook – with no thought at all for my feelings, I’m sure. I wish I was down there. The Northern Congregation was a great weekend and I had a really good time.

Enough gibber from me. I’d best check Facebook again. I’m enjoying telling Karen all editors are thoughtless self-centred bastards. If her next column says that, I’ll be able take credit for the idea!

PS: I’ve been out on the mountain bike today, and I think Pottsy went past with a pillion and gave me a blast on the horn as well. I was feeling the early stages of sunstroke at the time, but I’m pretty sure I waved back and everything. TF

  1. Yep you had heatstroke tom. I saw a bright red glow riding a pushbike and I thought ” who’s stupid enough to do that ! ”
Yep squirrel and squirrelette were getting away for the weekend on the vstrom. Just a tar run on back roads up the coast. I saw a nice Dakar painted KTM 990 at Yamba with a For Sale sign on it but squirrelette wouldn’t let me add it to the toyshed .
But I’m getting keen for the longest day and I’m trying out new Anzac biscuits recipes. There could be a new challenger for the biscuit champion

  2. mowing the lawn when I went past, no wonder you’re a bit glum, just reread last week’s post
